LO1- Twitter

A)Purpose: The purpose of this website is to let people socialize, interact and share their interests with other people, this is because it is a social media site.

B)Visitor Needs: One visitor needs that Twitter succeeds in is keeping you up to date with current trends, although there may be a section on the website that gives you the current trends, they are all represented in hashtags, these hashtags are like a hyperlink that when you click them, take you to a page where it has all the tweets/posts relating to that subject because people can put these hashtags into their tweet and talk about that subject. Another need Twitter succeeds in is messaging, every social networking site has this as it's a convention, and so a visitor really needs this as it can be a way to privately talk to someone without having to tweet at them for everyone to see.

C) Information Flow: Twitters information is dominantly shown through tweets/posts, this is because it's a social network site and the visitors of the sites own posts are the information on the site, and it is presented well as they have a character restriction of 140, this is useful because if Twitter had an unlimited character restriction, Twitter would bombard a visitor with information and would just be unusable. The tweets/posts are central to the page whilst on the top left of a your twitter feed there is your account details, showing your Username, Twitter handle, Number of followers, Number of people you're following and your Profile picture. This is also information other visitors can see. Your notifications are like your Twitter feed but don't contain as much posts/tweets, it shows who has liked, retweeted, replied to your tweets or followed you. Messages are just your messages, as it just displays them in a box, with the persons twitter handle (@), username, profile picture next to the message they had sent.

D) Features: There are many features on Twitter, the most notable being able to tweet, it allows you to run polls for people to vote on, insert images, GIFs and videos, Twitter is also known for having its restricted 140 Characters on the tweets unlike Facebook, another social network site, which does not, this is because Twitter is a more 'on the go' type of social network as people may not have time to read full paragraphs, this makes it so the people who tweet have to be straight to the point. Twitter also has a 'Twitter moments' this is a collection of tweets and information in one whole section of the website. This is another way to show trends on Twitter, and can be helpful for visitors who want to know what's going on in the world.

E) Benefits:
The benefits Twitter has having this website is mainly gaining a profit through the ads that you see in the Twitter feed, you can also pay to be promoted which advertises your accounts tweets, which is like what it does with companies ads.

F) Content:
Twitter has kept relatively the same since 2010, but has had a few changes regarding the layout. Twitter has mainly focused on making it easier to do things and navigate the website. In 2010 when you clicked on a tweet it expanded to the right of the twitter feed, also showing that accounts previous tweets, this may have been removed from future versions of Twitter due to the tweets cluttering the whole page. They had also updated with a new navigation bar, it stands out more than the previous as black text and white banner contrast better than the previous white text and black banner. They also had updated the site so that the background is not an image you had set it to be, many visitors may have not liked this update seen as it gave your page a personalised look, which is a big visitor need on social networking sites, but this was probably removed because Twitter wanted to keep a house style going through their website, and also probably because they wanted the page to look more clutter-free for the user. The website, other than the layout and design, they also added features to Twitter, one being the opinion poll, this allows the user to post a normal tweet asking a question, and then they can put in answers  for other users to vote on, this can be used for users who aren't sure on something and want other peoples opinions on it. They also added the feature that allows you to easily search for a GIF than having to download your own and then post it. They have kept some features though, such as allowing you to upload an image or video onto your tweet. There's also the feature that they have had from the start and that is allowing the user to 'favourite', 'retweet' (either the basic share, or you can 'quote' it and comment on the tweet.) and 'reply'. They have also changed how a retweet looks on your page, originally is would be laid out like this ( RT @Twitterhandle "Tweet") but now it simply has the same look of a tweet with small text above the tweet saying that you retweeted it.
