LO2 Planning a multi-page website: Small Machines

Purpose:
The purpose of the website for 'Small Machines' is to promote and sell Giles Gover's hydraulic powered construction kits like; diggers, lifts and hoists as well as accessories like Lamp kits and Dock kits. It is also to especially promote a range of kits called 'The Royal Armories Range' which are to be sold at its museums exclusively by the Armouries at their sites in Leeds, Portsmouth and The Tower of London, the products are basically mini wooden kit versions of siege weapons and devices from warfare in history. The kits are made from FSC approved wood and the packaging it 100% recyclable.

Audience:
It is asked that the website is aimed at both genders and that it should appeal not just to the 6+ year olds who will construct them, but also the person who will pay for it who are the parents, a relative like an uncle or just as a person who is buying it as a prize for example. It will be aimed at people who are upper middle class (people who's jobs are a profession or are in high management), middle class (Lower Manegment, professional) and lower middle class (Superviser, junior management or professional). It will also be aimed at people who are likely to make repeat purchases. The location of the audience may vary depending on how they can get the product, in this case people who live in Sheffield, and also people who live around The Royal Armories museum which are Leeds, Portsmouth and London.

Legal and Ethical:
Data Protection is a legal issue and the data protection is apart of the DPA (Data Protection Act) which is a law that protects a individuals data, these are things such as their photos, name, address, credit history etc. that are placed in a computer's database, these can be easily accessed and edited, a business can easily obtain this information, if the company that has it sells it or uses it without your permission, they have violated the law. They need to indicate what the information that they're going to store is and how it will be used, they also need to declare how it will be kept safe. Finally, they need to agree that they won't use the information in any other way.

There is one legal thing I will have to make sure I have a SSL Certificate, the reason behind this is to show to the customer who is purchasing anything from my site using their personal information that I will never share anything of it, the SSL certificate is specifically a small data file which allows a secure network between a web server and a website. I would need this if I was planning on coding my own site, but instead I am using Wix.com, and they can handle all of the credit card data etc. this is shown in their privacy policies.

LO1 - BBC News

A)Purpose: This websites purpose is to inform people of the news in the UK and the rest of the world, It informs on different subjects such as politics, science and entertainment news. The target audience is mainly towards adults as adults are the ones effected mostly by what goes on in the world, so they need this to know what’s going on and because its informing adults it is written in formal.

B)Visitor needs: This website lets the visitor easily look up news in there local area by just typing clicking on the 'Find Local News' button where it takes you to a page that you type in your post code and it'll show you the news in your area. The page also lets you choose what news subject you want which are located in the navagation bar and it will then link you to news about that subject.

C)Information flow: The page layout is quite clear as it has all the videos to go with some news at the side on the right as well as the radio stations that you can listen to online. The main story is at the top of the page in a bigger section that the smaller stories. The sections all have images that go with a headline of the story and a little description, when you click on it, it links you to that story so you can see it in greater detail. Finally, because the 'news' is a sub-website to the actual website 'BBC' it has another navigation bar that takes you to the other sub-websites of the BBC, like 'iPlayer' and 'TV'.

D)Features: This page has many features that some other pages do not have, for example the website, like I mentioned before has location device which can use your I.P address to find your location, you can also type in your post code and it will find your location that way, but if your on mobile it may use the GPS on your phone or tablet.

E)Benefits: The benefit of BBC having a website is that it needs to inform or educate otherwise they stop getting funding and then they can't keep running the website, so the benefit of the website doing what it does is that the page can be kept up.

F)Content: For about 14 years the BBC news website has been the same format, but as the times went on the BBC website we know today is much more presentable and colourful as to the website in 2001. The website now is also much wider than before as now they know how to code it so it's wider. Other similarities could be that back in 2001 you could watch videos and listen to audio features, but now they are better quality and you can listen to live audio like the radio. It has the main stories central to the page and smaller or minor stories at the side, on the other side their is a location feature similar to todays but not as complex or sophisticated, as it only lets you see news specific to a continent like Asia and Europe, but today it lets you see regions of a country like for the UK it will let you see news specific to Yorkshire, this shows that the website has come with the times as it informs better than it did when it near enough started in 2001. So in conclusion the content of the BBC News website has increased to better fit people who want to know what's happening in these times.

LO1- Fox Movies

A)Purpose: The purpose of Fox Movies website is to advertise and promote its movies, as shown is a new movie coming out and there are options to get the tickets, watch the trailer or see a description of the film. It helps promote its movies by persuading people, this is done by the trailer, so the person might like the trailer and want to see it, and then they have the option of booking tickets which might make the audience want to book them as the option to do so is right there. The target audience for the website is ranged from teens to adults as Fox Movies make a variety of films which means there’s a more varied target for the website to be aimed at.

B) Visitor Needs: Its website allows you to follow their updates on different social media by easily clicking on a link, this is useful as someone maybe can't wait for a movie and so want updates on it and they can get them through the most popular sites like Twitter and Facebook. The website also gives you a little information on what the plot is so you can see what it's about, so this can help with the decision of whether they want to go and watch it or not.

C)Information Flow: Fox Movies website makes it so it's clear what the buttons and hyperlinks will take you to as it presents them in bold text, and mainly in the centre of the page they have a movie wallpaper that goes with the bold text, this makes it so you can see what the name of the film is and what it looks like, this makes it look more presentable and professional as the images are in top quality so it makes the page look nice too.

D) It has a few features like the social media buttons which let you follow them on them like Facebook, Twitter and YouTube, which allows you to be kept updated on the films and other news.
It also lets you book tickets for films that are going to come out in the next week and the most anticipated. Finally it also lets you see which of their films are in theaters and what's coming soon.

F)Content: Above is Foxmovies.com in 2004, as you can see the content has changed widely, obviously movie wise but also information and accessibility wise. Now they have included a navigation bar which is missing from the 2004 website, which instead had boxes with links below the subtitles of what the links relate to, the links do the same as what the new one does, which takes you to the movies website, but on the newest version of the website it has the movies websites implemented into its own website. This is different because you had to go to the movies website to actually see about booking tickets, whilst in today's version you can book tickets from one click of the link. Then, unlike the new webpage, where the side scroll of images are smoother and are bigger, the 2004's website's side scroll of images was small and was automatically always going left, but it did let you control whether to stop it, or move it to the far left or right. Finally, the 2004 version was all cramped into the middle of the webpage, but this was because of the time the website was made, but now it uses all the space it can, with everything being more clearer and easy to navigate.

LO1- ASDA

A)Purpose: The purpose of this website is shopping (E-Commerce) and these websites are typically made for supermarkets such as ASDA and Tesco.

B)Visitor Needs: These can be used for someone to plan what they are going to get in the shop, to see if an item is in stock or the main purpose they are used for these days and that is to order and get delivered the items from the shop through delivery services.

C) Information Flow: The website is very clear as it's very easy to navigate due to there being links to many locations within the website. It shows what is popular and gives links to which the visitor can click on to take them to what's popular. It also has links to different parts of the shop, which you can go to by clicking text and images. At the bottom of the page is also has a link called "About ASDA" where it takes the visitor to a contact section and a section for finding jobs where the visitor can look at the job opportunities there.

D) Features: A main feature this website has is the e-commerce part of the website where it has two parts 'ASDA Groceries' where the visitor can order groceries (i.e. food, drink, pet food etc.) and 'George' which is the clothes part of the shop. these two have a simple shop and cart mechanic where you get to the product you want and then click 'Add' which it adds the product to your cart and then you can 'checkout' the product. But to do this with every e-commerce website you have to sign up with an e-mail or address, in which you may be added to a database where they keep this information so that whenever you do order again it does the checkout automatically.

E) Benefits:
The benefits that ASDA get from this website is definitely a profit, especially because people are buying from the online store to either order it for home delivery, or going to the store to collect it themselves as they can reserve the product. Other companies can also pay to let them advertise or promote their product on ASDA's website, giving them even more money.

F) Content:
The top image shows ASDA.com on the 13th of April 2016, the bottom shows ASDA.com on the 2nd of February 2007. Firstly, you can tell now that the width of the page has definitely expanded. There is also less white-space on the 2016 webpage as they have not just made the webpage much more simpler, but have made everything much bolder too, making the page look more presentable and user friendly. This makes the webpage look nicer and clear, whilst on the other hand the 2007 webpage had much more clutter with a ton of hyperlinks all over the page, whilst the 2016 webpage has much simplified the navigation bar by putting the main things people may search for, such as 'Groceries', 'George Clothing' which ASDA was not in partnership with at the time so didn't have it shown on there 2007 website, 'George Home' again not show, but it does link to similar stuff in the 2007 webpage like Entertainment and furniture, and finally, 'Money' which has everything to do with insurance, travel and motoring, this is yet another thing also included in the 2007 website, but again was presented in a clutter of information. The images were also a really low quality in 2007 compared to the high quality images on today's webpage.
Surprisingly, the 2007 webpage even had an online shop mechanism too like it still does today. It has changed little in the way that you can add items to carts, even have an account so that you don't have to fill in information every time you order something and finally the home delivery service, even though the time they did not do the 'Click and Collect' feature where you could just go and pick up the items. So in conclusion, there has not been much change content wise but there has been a lot of change in the way its presented and that it is much easier to navigate due to there being much less clutter.

LO1- Amazon Digital Music

A)Purpose: The purpose of this website is to let a customer download music from artists, just like iTunes or Google Play Music.

B)Visitor Needs: The website lets a visitor click on one of the albums links, in which it takes you to a page where you can buy different formats of the songs and this is where you can try a 30 second sample the song (as shown below) which is useful for visitors as they can hear a bit of the song before thinking of getting it. It also lets you use your Amazon Prime account (A subscription based service) to stream full albums without the purchase of the album, this would only count towards the visitors who actually pay for the subscription though.

C) Information Flow: The website's main information is shown through images, there isn't much text apart from the links to other parts of the page, the images are mostly of the album covers, this is probably made so that a viewer can easily spot the album they were looking for. The part that mostly has text is the navigation bar and also the sidebar with more options. The navigation bar leads to different parts in the webpage, it leads to the different types of forms of music such as CD, Vinyl and Digital Music. It also has few other options which make it easy for a visitor, such as 'New & Future Releases', 'Bargains', 'Best Sellers' and even 'Your Music Library'. Apart from 'Your Music Library', the rest all have the same house style which is just an album/single cover, the names of the album/single and then a rating. The 'Your Music Library' option on the other hand is for use of visitors with an Amazon account and with music purchases on Amazon, it allows them to view there music on the website. The side bar on the other hand, has some of the same links as the navigation bar, but it also has a few different hyperlinks, mainly under the section 'Browse by Genre', this allows you to select a certain genre you may be into and view albums and singles in that genre, this can make it easy for a visitor find the kind of songs they like.

D) Features:
The page has a feature where it recommends songs and albums related to the ones you have viewed before, this makes it easier for people on the website to find music they like as they might be looking for a song in the same genre of music or a similar artist. It also has the conventional cart system you usually see on websites that are selling things, on this website though, you typically have the choice between  buying it as a digital MP3 where you can easily download it, or you can choose to get a physical CD Album with a free MP3 album. If you choose the CD route you go to a page that recommends other items to you before you checkout the item, the recommended items are said to be items bought by people who also bought the album, this is also another thing that makes it easy for a visitor to find what they are looking for as the recommended may be something else they want to buy.

E) Benefits:
The benefits that Amazon get from this website is profit, they put artists albums on this website for people to buy, they also get paid by the artist for them to put their music on the site, but a lot of the money is given back to the artist every time a song is bought. they may also get money from people paying for the subscription service 'Amazon Prime' to stream music on the website.

F) Content:
This website has not been up very long with the earliest being the 25th of August 2014 (As shown below). The only notable change between the new and old version is a few house style changes and that they added a banner that moves showing different albums and different deals and offers (which were also in the navigation bar and side bar). The house style changes are were definitely to the colour and nothing to do with how the page's layout, the colours went from white and orange (the blue text being hyperlinks) whilst now Amazon have went with a more dominant black, as even the hyperlinks are now black text, the newer webpage does look a lot more bolder. There also been no changes to the features in the website at all.

LO1- Twitter

A)Purpose: The purpose of this website is to let people socialize, interact and share their interests with other people, this is because it is a social media site.

B)Visitor Needs: One visitor needs that Twitter succeeds in is keeping you up to date with current trends, although there may be a section on the website that gives you the current trends, they are all represented in hashtags, these hashtags are like a hyperlink that when you click them, take you to a page where it has all the tweets/posts relating to that subject because people can put these hashtags into their tweet and talk about that subject. Another need Twitter succeeds in is messaging, every social networking site has this as it's a convention, and so a visitor really needs this as it can be a way to privately talk to someone without having to tweet at them for everyone to see.

C) Information Flow: Twitters information is dominantly shown through tweets/posts, this is because it's a social network site and the visitors of the sites own posts are the information on the site, and it is presented well as they have a character restriction of 140, this is useful because if Twitter had an unlimited character restriction, Twitter would bombard a visitor with information and would just be unusable. The tweets/posts are central to the page whilst on the top left of a your twitter feed there is your account details, showing your Username, Twitter handle, Number of followers, Number of people you're following and your Profile picture. This is also information other visitors can see. Your notifications are like your Twitter feed but don't contain as much posts/tweets, it shows who has liked, retweeted, replied to your tweets or followed you. Messages are just your messages, as it just displays them in a box, with the persons twitter handle (@), username, profile picture next to the message they had sent.

D) Features: There are many features on Twitter, the most notable being able to tweet, it allows you to run polls for people to vote on, insert images, GIFs and videos, Twitter is also known for having its restricted 140 Characters on the tweets unlike Facebook, another social network site, which does not, this is because Twitter is a more 'on the go' type of social network as people may not have time to read full paragraphs, this makes it so the people who tweet have to be straight to the point. Twitter also has a 'Twitter moments' this is a collection of tweets and information in one whole section of the website. This is another way to show trends on Twitter, and can be helpful for visitors who want to know what's going on in the world.

E) Benefits:
The benefits Twitter has having this website is mainly gaining a profit through the ads that you see in the Twitter feed, you can also pay to be promoted which advertises your accounts tweets, which is like what it does with companies ads.

F) Content:
Twitter has kept relatively the same since 2010, but has had a few changes regarding the layout. Twitter has mainly focused on making it easier to do things and navigate the website. In 2010 when you clicked on a tweet it expanded to the right of the twitter feed, also showing that accounts previous tweets, this may have been removed from future versions of Twitter due to the tweets cluttering the whole page. They had also updated with a new navigation bar, it stands out more than the previous as black text and white banner contrast better than the previous white text and black banner. They also had updated the site so that the background is not an image you had set it to be, many visitors may have not liked this update seen as it gave your page a personalised look, which is a big visitor need on social networking sites, but this was probably removed because Twitter wanted to keep a house style going through their website, and also probably because they wanted the page to look more clutter-free for the user. The website, other than the layout and design, they also added features to Twitter, one being the opinion poll, this allows the user to post a normal tweet asking a question, and then they can put in answers  for other users to vote on, this can be used for users who aren't sure on something and want other peoples opinions on it. They also added the feature that allows you to easily search for a GIF than having to download your own and then post it. They have kept some features though, such as allowing you to upload an image or video onto your tweet. There's also the feature that they have had from the start and that is allowing the user to 'favourite', 'retweet' (either the basic share, or you can 'quote' it and comment on the tweet.) and 'reply'. They have also changed how a retweet looks on your page, originally is would be laid out like this ( RT @Twitterhandle "Tweet") but now it simply has the same look of a tweet with small text above the tweet saying that you retweeted it.
